Hungry dumps Nigeria out of FIBA U-19 women’s world cup

Nigeria’s D’Tigress have been eliminated from the ongoing FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup, following their disappointing 51-77 lose to Hungary in the Round of 16 of the tournament in Brno, Czech Republic.

‎It was a positive start for Nigeria in the early stages, as the coach Aderemi Adewunmi led team keenly contested and exerted themselves with great composure to tie the first quarter to a 9-9 points finish.
‎
‎However, the girls couldn’t keep up with the power play of their opponent, letting down their guards with lackluster offensive struggle which saw them conceded the widest margin of 30-12 points, advantage to Hungary in the second quarter.
‎
‎Nigeria came into the third quarter with a renewed vigor and posted a challenge to just a point deficit of 16-15 score. The team fell shot despite Jessica Ajayi’s (11pts) and Tobenna Nweke’s (12pts) lead in scoring, which wasn’t enough to keep them in the game.
‎
‎Too many missed shots, poor ball movement, and lack of urgency across key stretches made the difference for Hungary, as they ended the fourth quarter with a commanding 22-15 point difference to progress to the later stages of the competition.
‎
‎It was yet another underwhelming performance by the D’Tigress who are making their debut at the tournament.
‎
‎The team recorded just a win against China, lost to Canada, Portugal and Hungary to close their chapter in this year’s edition of the FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup championship in Brno, Czech Republic.
