Two beautiful goals from 2024 CAF and BBC Women’s player of the year, Barbara Banda seals a 3-2 victory for Zambia over Senegal, in second group A match of the ongoing WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
Copper Queens started off with quick fire, mounting series of pressure on the Terenga lionnesses in the early exchanges, but it was Nguernar Ndiaye who outpaced Zambia’s defense to open score in the 5th minute for Senegal before Barbara Banda drew level seven minute later.
Banda’s goal was some sort of surge for the Copper Queens, as they dominated play which led to their second goal in the 51st minute through Rachael Kundananji clinical finish, after two of Zambia’s goals were initially cancelled for offside.
Barbara Banda took the game beyond the Senegalese team in the 74th minute, hitting the back of the net on a rebound, following a poor clearance from the Senegalese goalkeeper, Ndiaye.
Goalkeeper Musole, gave Zambia away in her attempt to clear her line, clattered into striker, Nguernar Ndiaye in box 18 to concede a penalty which Nguernar dispatched clinically.
The final 10 minutes plus the additional time was a nervy one for both teams, with Senegal making most of the incursions in search of an equalizer, but yielded no positive result.
With this, Zambia have risen to the summit of Group A. The outcome of the other group opponents, Morocco vs Congo will determine who sits first on the log after the group’s second round of matches.
