The Teranga Lions of Senegal have secured a stunning 1-0 upset victory over Nigeria’s Super Eagles B, in their opening Group D clash of the 2024 CHAN tournament at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Tuesday.

It took a moment of brilliance for Senegal to get past Nigeria’s defence for the solitary goal, despite the Home Eagles dominant display with superior ball possession throughout the duration of the game.

It was a keenly contested encounter, with both teams putting their strong foots forward until the 75th minute when a defensive lapse defined the moment for Senegal, as Koité profited and pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box, beating goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal, and laid it off for Gomis to nestle into an empty net, giving Senegal the lead and ultimately, all three points.

Before the goal, the Super Eagles had managed to contain Senegal, with neither side creating many clear chances in a match marked by midfield battles and multiple fouls.

The result leaves Nigeria with work to do in their remaining group fixtures, with a must-win clash against Sudan up next
