Justine Madugu, Super Falcons coach has vowed to improve individual performance and correct team errors before Nigeria’s final group game against Algeria on Sunday, at the ongoing WAFCON tournament in Morocco, continentalnews.com.ng, reports.
Speaking during a post match conference after Nigeria’s hard earned 1-0 victory over Botswana on Thursday, Madugu said his team is still work in progress, however, changes will be effected in their final group game against Algeria, to see a range of individual capability in readiness for the later stages of the competition.
”They’re individual errors that will need to be corrected, they’re team errors that we will work on. The team is still work in progress, we will make changes against Algeria to give other players the chance to play.”
Also reacting to the outcome of the game against Botswana, Madugu described “The Mares” as a tough and competitive team who were determined to get a positive result from the Super Falcons.
And while Nigerian’s were expecting total annihilation of the Botswana team, Madugu said the unmet expectation will be seen as valuable lessons in understanding different perspectives and the reality of different game situations, sighting poor individual performance as a major factor that accounted to the way the team played.
“The game was a tough one and highly competitive. The Botswana girls were very spirited and determined, it was a good game, however, every match has its own strategies, sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t work, and that’s why you have to effect changes when you realize that things are not working out for you.”
”It is not always that you will have good days, they are times you can also have bad days, it’s not deliberate. Yes to an extent, individual players didn’t put up a good performance and that accounted for the way the game went on our side, we’re not happy about it but it got better especially in the second half, opportunities came our way which we converted.” he stated.
Botswana presented a decent team and were a hard nut to crack, however, the Super Falcons subdued them with a perfect-inch Esther Okoronkwo’s assist for Chinwendu Ihezuo who sliced home past goalkeeper, Boseja, with just a minute left of regulation time on Thursday.
Nigeria is on top of Group B with six points and will face Algeria in the final group game at the Stade Larbi Zaouli stadium on Sunday.
