14th Women AFCON: Super Falcons face Banyana in crucial World Cup play-off battle

Following their agonising quarter-final exit at the 14th Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have another opportunity to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive when they confront arch-rivals Banyana Banyana of South Africa in Casablanca on Thursday.

The high-stakes encounter, scheduled for the Moulay Rachid Stadium at 9pm, will determine which of the two African giants advances to the Inter-Confederations Play-off Tournament, their remaining route to the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

Thursday’s clash comes exactly one year and 22 days after the teams last met in a dramatic Women AFCON semi-final, also in Casablanca. Nigeria prevailed 2-1 after defender Michelle Alozie produced a stunning added-time winner that ended South Africa’s title defence. Both teams had earlier converted penalty kicks in a fiercely contested encounter.

The rivalry between the Super Falcons and Banyana Banyana is one of the most enduring in African women’s football. South Africa have defeated Nigeria in three editions of the Women AFCON – 2012, 2018 and 2022 – but the overall record remains heavily in favour of the 10-time African champions, who have recorded 17 victories in their other meetings with Banyana.

The stakes will be even higher on Thursday, with neither side willing to surrender another opportunity to qualify for the global showpiece.

Nigeria and South Africa have already fought several memorable battles in recent years. Their 2024 Olympic qualifying contest went down to the wire, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade’s penalty in Abuja proving decisive over the two legs. Two years earlier, Banyana Banyana defeated the Falcons 2-1 in their opening match of the 2022 Women AFCON in Morocco.

Ajibade will once again captain the Super Falcons, while South Africa will look to the pace, experience and finishing ability of their dangerous forward Thembi Kgatlana.

The Falcons will also be expected to sharpen their finishing after creating several promising opportunities in Sunday’s quarter-final against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses without finding the back of the net.

Coach Justin Madugu will therefore be hoping for greater clinical efficiency from his attacking players as Nigeria seek to overcome their familiar rivals and take another important step towards the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
