Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a painful 1–0 defeat to eternal rivals Cameroon on Sunday night, bringing their defence of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title to an agonising end in a fiercely contested quarter-final clash in Casablanca.
Despite producing a spirited performance and dominating large spells of the encounter, the defending champions were unable to find the breakthrough against a resolute Indomitable Lionesses side.
Cameroon struck in the 19th minute with a well-executed free-kick that caught the Super Falcons off guard and handed the Indomitable Lionesses the lead against the run of play.
Nigeria responded with greater urgency, applying sustained physical and tactical pressure as they searched for an equaliser. Gift Monday and Jennifer Echegini both came close, but Cameroon’s Portugal-based goalkeeper, Michaely, produced a series of crucial interventions to preserve her side’s advantage.
In a bid to change the course of the game, coach Justin Madugu made his first change in the 38th minute, bringing on Uchenna Kanu for Rinsola Babajide.
The Falcons continued to push after the interval, with further attacking reinforcements introduced as Toni Payne, Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala joined the contest.
Nigeria dominated territorial possession and spent long periods camped inside Cameroon’s half, throwing wave after wave of attacks at the Indomitable Lionesses.
However, Cameroon’s disciplined defensive organisation proved difficult to break down. Even during an intense period of pressure deep into stoppage time, the Super Falcons could not find the decisive touch needed to force the game into extra time.
The defeat ends Nigeria’s hopes of retaining the continental crown, but their quest for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup remains alive.
The Super Falcons will now face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana later this week in a crucial play-off, with the winner advancing to the inter-confederation play-off for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
For Nigeria, the focus now shifts from defending their continental title to keeping their World Cup dream alive.
